The ladybug passes solid waste from its penis
What signifies the arrival of spring more than a couple of lovely ladybugs? Blossoming trees maybe, but our small little friends, the Coccinellidae as biologists call them, have their special place too.
Over the centuries, they've captured the heart of young and old a like, and you've got to admit, they're beautiful creatures.
A predator, the ladybug (or ladybird as some call it) loves to devour aphids and other juicy tiny insects.
In the winter, most adults don't hibernate, but stay on the same place and keep themselves close together to keep warm.
But did you know of the ladybugs toilet habits? Well, probably not, because they don't pass urine or excrement in the same way that we humans do. After their food is digested, the hard parts slowly comes back up and out of their mouths, in a similar fashion to how owls pass up the indigestible bones. But the soft waste exit through what looks like their penis, that's for males and females, But urine, they don't need to pass, since excess water leaves their body in a perspiration-like process.
And by the way, the number of spots on a ladybugs back doesnt tell you how old in years they are, oh no, thats just a child myth. But what they do show you is what species they belong to.
Overall, 5000 is about the number of how many ladybug species there are out there, astonishing!
